Don’t Believe Everything You Think

October 18, 2011 by Julette Leave a Comment

But don’t stop there…If you believe this is true…that believing everything you think is not a good idea, then why stop there?

Our thoughts are deceiving. They are sometimes (often) more negative than accurate. They bring us down (never a good thing) or pump us up, sometimes to a fault.

Most people would agree with that general statement.

So if that is true, equally true is this:

Sometimes we have to doubt those feelings as well. They are just not trustworthy. They can stop us from trying new things, taking chances and grabbing opportunities. They are also quite capable of stopping us from loving others as we could. They often pop up on the basis of one little thought. And we already know those are not exactly reliable.

As for the things we say…sometimes we can say some outrageous things! Things we need to take back or one day laugh about. Things that are simply not true.

Things we hear…obviously, we have to examine other people’s comments and findings to be sure they are connected to truth. This is a skill slipping away from the population at large. We tend to believe what is in print or said on TV from a so-called trustworthy source without as much as a glance. Critical thinking is not as popular as it needs to be in these trying times.

Things we believe…because they are based on what we think, feel, hear and say…or vaguely remember, we had better take those out for a little spring cleaning from time to time. Take them out for a spin, see if they still hold up to what you know to be the truth.   Sometimes we inherit beliefs and take them in as gospel, when they may be based on someone’s pain or lack of knowledge.

Let us examine those beliefs, turn those thoughts over for some airing; question the precious feelings and for goodness sake confirm what we hear!

Then maybe we will have far less foolishness to say.

Food for thought?

Wishing you a ton of truth,

Julette Millien
