Hello Friend,
It is so much easier to say “today I am going to be _____________” – than to do it or be it. Fill in any positive word you’d like. Perhaps, productive? Positive? Optimistic? Joy-filled? Inspired? Complete with the state of being of your choice.
Is that enough? Hardly! We have to say this in the form of an absolute commitment. We have to mean it and we have to be crystal clear on the “why” behind the desire.
How does one adjust a state of being (which then leads, with sufficient practice to a change in mindset)?
Below is my strategy for ‘in the moment’ adjustments. When I know something needs to be done NOW, I take the steps outlined below.
Now of course there are things – thoughts, emotions, habits, etc – to do with the need for mindset adjustment that are recurring. And the need to be proactive with strategies and approaches that go deeper into “why” in these cases is assumed. If certain things keep popping up for you and there is some indication of a core issue beneath the habit, I would suggest speaking to a professional/spiritual guide or coach who will be able to assist you with getting those core issues uprooted.
This approach will work to get rid of bad mindset habits and can get the deeper work started. More will be needed if more is there.
Let’s just look at the ‘in the moment’ response to a negative mindset that has worked for me.
Here’s my approach:
- FIRST – as something persists in pulling you away from your preferred mindset, recognize a change is needed and accept that fact
- Be completely still in the moment of recognition – for 10 seconds
- Take 3 DEEP breaths as I consciously breathe in new energy and new power – and VISUALIZE the mindset taking hold
- Repeat a prayer, affirmation or chosen scripture – chosen just for this moment…these words must be empowering and said with COMPLETE enthusiasm and conviction. If the enthusiasm is not there at first, say it until it is real – takes me about 2-3 times to get the real enthusiasm needed, it used to be more!
- Consciously think the thought that I know reflects the mindset I’m after – so if I want to be playful and I know it’s not happening yet, I’d think “Being playful right now is EXACTLY what I want and need in order to enjoy this moment with______.” It also helps for me to visualize how much of a blessing it would be to the person I’m with if I were playful right now. In this step knowing my ‘why’ is crucial. Why is a mindset change, right now, needed?
- Be still again as I breathe deeply and give thanks to God for this mindset transformation and my ability/willingness to make it happen
- Take note of how long that change took to happen and what I was doing when it occurred (this is part of the learning process, to help me with mindset transformation the next time – the time will decrease over time)
These steps work…try them now as you take yourself from one level of involvement and commitment to another – in any area of your life that needs a higher level of commitment.
The idea here is to not just do this once in a while – the idea is to dedicate yourself to doing these steps as often as possible – and maybe for a specific amount of time during the day – like a few hours, do it every time you lapse into negativity. If you dedicate the next 21 days (see free 21-day e-coaching program at my site) to creating a positive mindset, it will be the best gift you have ever given yourself! It’s liberating, transforming… just magical to have your mind under YOUR control.
Here are some empowering thoughts I use about mindset transformation:
- I LOVE challenges, so changing/improving my mindset will be SO much fun
- My thoughts become my life, I choose them wisely
- This challenge might/will REALLY stretch me and I’m going to LOVE the feeling of being stretched
These are just a few…you come up with some of your own. The more passionate you are about these ‘go-to’ empowering thoughts the quicker the mindset adjustment. Have fun with this! 🙂
Wishing you an abundance of peace, personal power and joy,
