How to Handle Fear

May 15, 2014 by Julette Leave a Comment

Courage-NelsonMandela

Hello Dear One!

If each time you come upon a scary undertaking, you see it as a sign, an invitation for growth, imagine the impact this attitude of positive optimism and courage will have on your ability to handle that “scary” undertaking.

Deciding to do what scares you is a decision that pays huge dividends even before you take your first step; your positive attitude fortifies you and gives you even more courage and confidence to move forward.

If you choose to shy away from what scares us, you will develop a habit and mindset of fear and avoidance which will follow you into all areas of your life.

There is no joy in fear. Those fears must be confronted; square-on. Start small: The beauty of this approach to life is no matter how small or insignificant the fear, confronting it will have a powerful positive impact on your mindset and approach to future, bigger fears.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. Nelson Mandela

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.‘  Eleanor Roosevelt

Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage. Maya Angelou

Do this:

  • Take on at least one “scary” (conversations, projects, activities, trips, etc.,) thing per week and you will find your courage muscle will grow and grow. Soon you will be afraid of very little. And courage and confidence takes you straight to joy.
  • Affirm daily: “Fear is an illusion” and “I have nothing to fear but fear itself”
  • Write a list of the things you think you fear and one by one, face them
  • When you’ve done all the items on your list, burn it or shred it
  • Most importantly, KNOW where your strength comes from – for me it is God and the power of Love. Do whatever you need to do to stay connected to your source…

Remember, the goal is not to get rid of fear… we all have them from time to time, the goal is to take action IN SPITE of your fear.  There you will triumph!

Wishing you an abundance of joy, courage and peace,

Julette Millien
