Overwhelmed? Day 7 of 21-DD

December 14, 2010 by Julette Leave a Comment

Hello,

I KNOW this challenge is not easy, believe me. As challenges go, committing to 21 challenges to be completed in 21 days, with most requiring some serious adjustments to daily routines is NO JOKE a serious challenge.  Remaining engaged with this journey requires high-level commitment and self-discipline. And, as mentioned yesterday, facing challenges is where all the good stuff is in life…it’s where/when we grow and get stretched into our vision of our wonderful self.

But if we don’t grab hold of the emotions as we face as we meet these challenges we can get seriously overwhelmed.

We always have a choice – become overwhelmed by challenges or run right to them and face them with glee.  In order to do the latter we first have to manage the emotions of overwhelm. An earlier post from the last detox challenge handled this topic.  I suggest you read it and take the steps as suggested.

Then do this quick exercise:

  1. Create a list of your top three powerful habits with regard to getting these challenges accomplished daily. What are you doing really well in this challenge? Why…which habits of thought and/or action can be credited with helping you to perform at your best?
  2. Then take a look at the other side. Name the main 3 habits – in thought or action that are connected to you NOT meeting any number of the 21 challenges.  What are you not getting done or even attempting? Which daily habits get in the way of them getting done?
  3. Now look at your power habits…how can they help with facing those more challenging challenges?

For instance, say you have a great habit of being organized and it has helped you to get your 21-day program papers completed and to get many or even all  challenges accomplished each day because basically you remember to do them.  How can you use that habit/skill of being organized to help you with the challenge you have avoided.

Say for example you have avoided having conversations with people who inspire you. How can being an organized person help you to face that challenge?  Would writing out some questions ahead of time help? Or perhaps, scheduling a meeting with the person ahead of time will have you put your power habit to good use.

Think of what you do very well and leverage it. Put it to good use. Apply it to those areas where some help is needed.

We don’t use our resources enough – external or internal ones.  So, take stock, apply and reap the rewards of your power habits.

If you don’t, you continue to run the risk of succumbing to the emotional rise and fall of “overwhelm.”

When all else fails, the best on-the-spot remedy for overwhelm is to simply STOP, BREATHE and BE STILL for as long as you can spare.  Amazingly, the spirit of calm and love takes over and anchors you once again.

Wishing you an abundance of peace, joy and light,

Julette Millien
